Welcome

Read below to get a clear understanding of how your first pelvic physical therapy visit will go, whether you choose an in-person or virtual session. This overview will help you feel prepared, informed, and comfortable every step of the way.

What to Expect

Your first pelvic physical therapy visit starts with a detailed conversation. You’ll sit down with your therapist to talk through your symptoms, how they developed, your medical and pelvic health history, and your goals. This helps us understand the full picture and identify the root cause of your concerns. We’ll also assess how your body moves by looking at posture, breathing, strength, and mobility through your hips, core, and low back, since these areas often play a role in pelvic floor symptoms.

If appropriate and with your full consent, an in-person visit may include an external and/or internal pelvic floor assessment. This is done in a private setting with clear explanations every step of the way, focusing on muscle tension, coordination, strength, and areas of discomfort. That said, you are always in control—internal exams are never required on the first visit (or at all), and we can gather valuable information through external assessment alone.

For virtual visits, the focus is on a thorough evaluation of your symptoms, history, and movement patterns to guide treatment. Your therapist may walk you through simple self-assessment techniques if appropriate, but no external visualization of the pelvic floor is required. You’ll still receive a comprehensive plan of care, education, and personalized exercises to start making progress right away, all from the comfort of your home.
